Import a bank statement into Xero

Xero imports statements as CSV or OFX files, not PDF. Convert the statement, import it into the bank account, and the lines are waiting on the Reconcile tab.

Free · no signup · up to 10 pages per statement · files are never stored

Downloaded (text-based) statements are converted right in your browser, so the file never leaves your computer. Try it with your Wi-Fi off. Scanned statements need online processing, and we ask first.

Step by step

The Xero CSV follows Xero's own template (Date, Amount, Payee, Description, Reference), so the columns map themselves. Notes you add while reviewing go into Reference.

  1. 1

    Convert the PDF

Upload the statement above, check the rows, pick “Xero (CSV)” and download.

  2. 2

    Open the bank account

In Xero go to Accounting → Bank accounts and find the account the statement belongs to.

  3. 3

    Import a statement

Click Manage account (the menu on that account) → Import a statement.

  4. 4

    Choose the file

Browse to the CSV, then Import.

  5. 5

    Check the columns

Xero shows how it read each column. Confirm Date, Amount, Payee, Description and Reference, and set the date format to the one you downloaded.

  6. 6

    Reconcile

Complete the import; the lines appear on the account's Reconcile tab to match or create.

Xero moves its menus now and then; if a name above has changed, look for the import or upload option on the bank account.

Good to know

  • If two statements overlap, check the Reconcile tab for lines that appear twice before matching them.
  • Use the same date format you picked in the converter (DD/MM/YYYY outside the US) when Xero asks.
  • OFX works too if you prefer: Xero reads it without any column mapping.
